Blogging vs Writing Fiction

a guest post written by Veronica Blade

I’m all set to write a guest post for tomorrow and I can’t think of anything to write about. So here I sit/lie in my sweats (I’m wearing the nasty ones because I really need to do laundry) — well, sort of sitting. Actually, I’m mostly lying horizontally with my beloved laptop propped up on my knees, my fluffy, white lapdog Delilah curled at my hip.

For a Paranormal Romance writer like me who’s used to creating all sorts of strange worlds, you'd think I could just vomit words out through my fingertips as easily as I create monsters. And yet… nothing. In real life, I'm simply not that interesting! For instance, my husband just came home and he’s complaining that he had to drive around in traffic all day and the fact that I haven’t made dinner and the cat puked on the floor — again. See? Not made of awesome, is it?

And that’s why I don’t do any real blogging on my own blog.

On the other hand, writing fiction is exhilarating — building worlds, meeting new characters, creating scenarios of potential imminent death. My characters come to life, take over my world, invade my dreams, hijack the storyline and wreak havoc in general. Then I get even with them for the angst they cause me, by torturing them and putting them in harm’s way so that they’re miserable too.

Together, my characters and I do a blissful sort of dance and, in the end, we have romance, tension and other-worldly creatures all tied up in a neat little happy package. But when it comes to blogging, my imagination comes to a screeching halt.

And I know exactly why that is. Here I am in my sweatpants, staring at a computer screen, with no dinner and cat puke on the floor. What will I blog about? Not that!

Real life = mostly dull. Fiction = thrilling!

I write novels for the same reason you read them. All the lack of sleep and staying up into the wee hours to create stories is all very worthwhile, so that you, in turn, will be blessed with sleep deprivation from reading them. Happy reading, everyone!
